Volunteer in your Area: I learned a long time ago that money dose not solve everything. Sometimes you need to get out and Volunteer.
My first experience with this was so rewarding. A friend of mine asked if I would help with a youth organization that was set up for the Los Angeles refugee children from the Rwanda Genocide.  They needed a basketball Coach for a YMCA league, so I agreed to do it. Was the best decision I ever made. I spent that summer Driving around Compton picking, these refugee kids up form their homes, and taking them to gyms so they could have a little smile in their Day, and just shoot some hoops.  We did not win a game, that summer, but the lessons I learned were priceless.
Heifer International's mission is to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth. Dan West was a farmer from the American Midwest and member of the Church of the Brethren who went to the front lines of the Spanish Civil War as an aid worker. His mission was to provide relief, but he soon discovered the meager single cup of milk rationed to the weary refugees once a day was not enough. And then he had a thought: What if they had not a cup, but a cow?
That "teach a man to fish" philosophy is what drove West to found Heifer International. And now, nearly 70 years later, that philosophy still inspires our work to end world hunger and poverty throughout the world once and for all.
Mariani Films: 2015 Year to date gifts: 1 GOAT 1 Flock of Chicks
Thea’s story begins as a rather typical one for a seventeen-year-old girl, making Cs and Ds and not excited about school. However, by the end of her junior year, Thea was making As and Bs in difficult subjects and loving school. How bittersweet for us to learn just days after her fatal car accident that Thea had received an A in Trigonometry for the 2000-2001 school year. Linda and I immediately sought to understand what happened in Thea’s life that caused such a drastic transformation in a short seven months.
Now, after more than ten years of experience and research in education, we know that Thea’s sudden involvement in visual art, dance, drama and creative writing made all the difference.
Based on this conclusion, our programs – Scholarships, Thea’s Art Closet, Arkansas A+ Schools and more – have been designed to inspire youth who, like Thea, gain confidence and learn via creative expression.
Please find more information on our programs under the “What We Do” tab above. Thank you for visiting our site! I hope you find lots of helpful and inspirational information while you are here.
